Frequently Asked Questions

What does “Holisticish” mean?

It means we live intentionally — not obsessively.

We prioritize thoughtful, safer ingredients and reduce unnecessary toxins wherever possible. Many of our products are made with botanicals, mineral clays, grass-fed tallow, and plant oils. Occasionally, we use high-quality fragrance oils when they achieve a scent more safely or effectively than essential oils.

We’re rooted in nature — but we live in the real world.

Are your products 100% natural?

Many are. Some are not — intentionally.

We focus on:

  • Thoughtful sourcing

  • Safe usage rates

  • Ingredient transparency

  • Performance and skin feel

If a product contains fragrance oil, mica, or a preservative required for stability, it is clearly listed on the ingredient panel.

Do you use essential oils or fragrance oils?

Both — depending on the product.

Essential oils are used when appropriate for safety, performance, and scent goals.

Fragrance oils may be used when:

  • A scent cannot be safely achieved with essential oils

  • Longevity or stability is improved

  • Customers prefer bakery, nostalgic, or specialty scent profiles

All fragrance oils used are skin-safe, phthalate-free, and used within cosmetic safety guidelines.

Are all your products tallow-based?

No.

While tallow is a cornerstone ingredient in many formulations, we also use high-quality plant oils such as:

  • Olive oil

  • Sunflower oil

  • Hempseed oil

  • Castor oil

  • Sweet almond oil

  • Apricot kernel oil

  • Coconut oil

  • Responsibly sourced RSPO-certified palm oil

Each formula is crafted intentionally for performance, stability, and skin compatibility.

Are your products organic?

We use organic ingredients whenever feasible and available.

Many small-batch, high-quality products use organically grown ingredients but do not pursue formal USDA Organic certification due to the cost and regulatory requirements involved.

Our focus is ingredient integrity and quality — not paying for certification labels.

Are your products FDA approved?

Cosmetic products in the United States are not pre-approved by the FDA.

We formulate according to cosmetic safety standards and industry best practices. Our products are cosmetic in nature and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

How long do your products last?

When stored properly, our products typically last:

  • Soaps: 12–18 months

  • Balms and salves: 6–12 months

  • Shower steamers: Best within 6 months

  • Dog treats: Refer to package for best-by date

Storage Tips:

  • Store in a cool, dry place

  • Avoid direct sunlight

  • Keep lids tightly closed

  • Allow soap to dry fully between uses

Proper storage significantly extends product life.

Why does handcrafted soap sometimes have imperfections or soda ash?

Handcrafted soap is naturally variable.

Variations in:

  • Color

  • Shape

  • Texture

  • Soda ash

are normal and common in cold process soapmaking. These variations do not affect performance or safety.

Each batch is unique — not factory produced.

Are your products cruelty-free?

Yes. We do not test on animals.

And while we don’t employ official lab coat taste testers — every dog who has sampled Koda’s Cookies has happily approved. 🐾

Are your dog treats ODA compliant?

Our dog treats are formulated and labeled according to guidance from the Oregon Department of Agriculture (ODA) Feed Program.

We follow labeling and production requirements applicable to our product category.

Do you use palm oil?

Yes — responsibly.

We use RSPO-certified (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) palm oil in select soap formulations to create hardness and longevity while supporting more sustainable sourcing practices.

What does “non-toxic” mean to you?

For us, non-toxic means:

  • Avoiding unnecessary harsh chemicals

  • Using ingredients within safe cosmetic limits

  • Prioritizing skin barrier health

  • Being transparent about what’s included

It does not mean chemical-free — because everything is made of chemicals.

It means intentional formulation.

Why do some products contain menthol?

Our shower steamers contain menthol crystals to enhance the aromatic shower experience.

They are designed for shower-floor use only and are not intended for bath use or direct skin contact.

Always use as directed.

Do you accept returns?

Due to the nature of personal care and animal products, we do not accept returns.

If there is an issue with your order, please contact us within 7 days of delivery. Verified concerns will be reviewed and resolved appropriately.
